In Summer of 2021, Coach traveled to Iceland for a 10-day holiday; before returning, he went looking for jerseys from local teams to add to his collection. Looking through a wall of local teams’ kits, he glanced to the right and saw a deep blue shirt that made him say “Wow!” aloud. When he asked about it, he learned it was the Icelandic men’s team jersey. He bought it and brought it home. A few weeks later, he wore that jersey to a practice; the players saw it and they, too, said “Wow!” – and they wanted it for the team kit. Unfortunately, nobody knew where to find them; the store in Reykjavik only had seven left; a store in Scotland had a handful… and, after weeks of searching, he came up empty. He decided to make a desperate phone call to the Icelandic Football Association to ask if they might know where there were enough for a team.
Coach was not to surprised that his inquiry was met with a mixture of disbelief and bemusement: “Why would you want 30 jerseys?”,” “What kind of team is this?” “What kind of league?” After a lot of discussion and explanation, the federation answered “We have them” – and put him in touch with the warehouser for the National Team’s materials. A deal was struck, with the admonition that it would take 4-6 weeks to get the goods delivered to Texas. “We don’t have four weeks; we start the season in two weeks”, he advised; “I will fly to Iceland to get them.” Two days later – in January of 2020, he landed in Iceland. That same day, he turned around returned with 30 blue and 30 white Iceland National Team jerseys.
Proud of their new kit, and inspired by Iceland’s football history and achievements, the team knew it was time to change their identity. “Ice FC” was born.
